Clinical Skills and Simulation Labs (CSSL)
The Jackson campus features four high-fidelity simulation suites with control rooms and adjoining debriefing spaces located in the Classroom Wing. These areas emulate hospital and clinic settings, allowing students to practice skills using mid- and high-fidelity simulators. Additional CSSL spaces in the SON’s main building serve as clinical skills labs. These labs include 27 treatment bays, a home environment lab and one advanced practice primary care office with two clinic beds.
The Oxford instructional site houses six high-fidelity simulation suites across two floors in the South Oxford Center, complete with pre-briefing and debriefing rooms. Initially a hospital, this space replicates real-world clinical environments to support skill development and clinical competence. The site also includes eleven clinical skills rooms designed for comfortable and realistic learning. Students practice clinical skills with mid-fidelity simulators and task trainers. Additional facilities include a home environment simulation suite, an advanced practice primary care area with three clinic beds and advanced practice training equipment.
The SON has access to shared space in the UMMC Simulation and Interprofessional Education Center in Jackson, which supports interprofessional, simulation-based skill training and case management. The Judith Gore Gearhart Clinical Skills Center also provides standardized patients for simulated encounters, enhancing learning and clinical experiences while offering formative evaluations for students.
Mission statement
The mission of the CSSL is to provide nursing students with high-quality, hands-on learning experiences grounded in nursing knowledge, patient safety, evidence-based practice and professionalism. The CSSL is a safe and realistic environment that fosters active learning, addresses diverse learning styles, encourages collaboration and sets high expectations for performance. The lab supports the development of skills and knowledge that align with the outcomes of both undergraduate and graduate nursing programs.
